SCRAPBOOK

Precedent Studies are crucial to the design process. The opportunity to analyse previous designs and observe the features that succeeded and the features that could be changed. This scrapbook is my collection of Precedent Studies used in current designs and for the future.

This page is a constant work in progress, with new Precedent Studies regularly added. Please check back often for updates.

Design Context

Designed by WW+P Architects, this project aimed to improve the passenger experience at Paddington, especially with movement from the Elizabeth line to the main concourse. The station was completed and opened to passengers in 2022.

Key Elements

The core element of this design revolves around placing the platforms far below ground level, reducing noise from the trains from reaching street level. This design also allows sunlight to penetrate deep into the space, a contrast to the typical look of many London Underground stations.

This is achieved by placing each level offset from the level above, allowing light to bounce between each level. This creates a light and airy feel to the station level, and coupled with the materiality creates a welcoming space to board and alight from trains.

This concept also allows views onto street level whilst being below ground, further reducing the enclosed feeling often attributed to London Underground Stations.

The design also kept passenger movement at its core, creating multiple routes that allow easy passage from upper to lower levels, which also increases throughput during busier periods.

Personal Takeaways

My key takeaway from this project is the use of offset levels to allow light to penetrate deep into the space. The use of lighter materials and natural sunlight creates an airy and welcoming space. These ideas will be incredibly useful during projects where spaces like these are needed.
