JIG | A DESIGN STORY

Chapter 1 | Research

I first began researching potential areas for a housing development site and found a suitable site, Former Kodak Office Building HA1 4TY. Its location is close to Harrow & Wealdstone Train Station and Underground. After this, I began researching the space requirements for development to create a design efficient in living space, but also natural space. This research then led to the sketching phase.

Chapter 2 | Sketching

The first sketch was created once the space requirements had been decided. I tried many designs but settled on a simple cuboid with cut-outs to break up the façade. I added balconies to the design, then removed them for later designs. I eventually settled on the inclusion of balconies for the final design.

Chapter 3 | Sketchup

Once finalising the sketches, I began to create a 3D Sketchup model to fully convey my ideas. Most innovation in the design appeared in this stage as the 3D aspects allowed me to create more complex features. This model went through many design changes, including the addition of the triangular façade on both sides. After finishing this model, I imported it into Twinmotion to create a promotional trailer.

Chapter 4 | Twinmotion

WORK IN PROGRESS[The left images show the set-up and preparation for the renders on the right side. This stage allowed me to focus on the finer details of my design, particularly the inclusion of furniture and lighting to portray how the space will be utilised by potential users. The Twinmotion stage allowed me to create a promotional video for my design, which will convey the uses and purpose of the building.]

Conclusion

This project was incredibly interesting and fun to work on. The name ‘Jig’ comes from the aerial view looking like jigsaw pieces. I tried to follow building regulations and standards during the design stage, but I look forward to expanding this knowledge in the future.
