Inspired by Zaha Hadid’s national stadium in Japan, I decided to create a stadium design for the upcoming 2023 Rugby World Cup.
I started by creating a selection of images to reference, which also included some influence from Bath Rugby’s new stadium. One regret of this project was that I didn’t spend long creating sketches and I moved quite quickly onto Sketchup to create a 3D model. This was because I already knew most of the design details, and I struggled sketching only one perspective on a page. This however led to limitations in my design as the Sketchup program struggled with the size and complexity of the design.
Once I had a Sketchup model I was happy with, I imported it into Sketchup to add more details and lighting elements. The recent addition of Quixel and Sketchfab to Twinmotion allowed for me to add more assets and use 3D scanned textures. However, this also lead to frequent crashes and therefore required workarounds to include the features whilst reducing the load.
In conclusion, if I did this project again, I would spend more time with sketches to put across my full ideas, rather than going straight to software that ultimately limited my design. However, as well as improving my sketching/drawing skills, I also plan to learn Revit and Unreal Engine 5, which are more powerful and can therefore handle more complex designs.
